La Familia Zuniga

While in El Salvador in June and July of 2007 working on a documentary film for S.A.R.A. I was looking for familes to interview who worked in the mangrove swamps and on the river as currileros and fishermen. We found the Zuniga family living on a plot of borrowed land near the river bank in a house they had patched together from palm logs, scraps of siding and random boards and driftwood. I returned to them several times, both to interview them and to bring a package of food and supplies purchased by S.A.R.A. team members. According to the father, Jose Marcos Zuniga, age 47, he had been abandoned by his wife for another man some years before and left to raise his five boys: Marcos, Antonio, Carlos, Nelson, and Armando as well as his wife's daughter by a previous marriage who was not present and whom he did not name. Zuniga said the family supported themselves by digging for clams and fishing, making collectively about $20 per week.
